Midweek holiday pay in the wood product sector during the turn of the year 2019–2020

1 Mechanical forestry industry

Paid midweek holidays are holidays that fall on weekdays other than Saturdays and Sundays. These days include Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Epiphany, for which employees receive eight hours’ average hourly pay if the employment relationship has lasted without interruption for at least one month prior to the midweek holiday.

A further condition for midweek holiday pay is that the employee must have worked in accordance with the working hour system on the work day immediately preceding or following the midweek holiday.

Midweek holiday pay is paid also in situations where the midweek holiday falls on the employee’s annual holiday or paid sick leave, or during leave due to an illness off a child under the age of ten.

Employees are entitled to midweek holiday pay also for those midweek holidays that fall on the first 15 calendar days from the start of a lay-off.

In addition to midweek holiday pay, employees working over Christmas receive pay with a 200% increase.

Employees working on Independence Day receive pay according to the Act on Independence Day.

2 Carpentry industry

In addition to midweek holiday pay, employees working on a midweek holiday receive Sunday pay as well as possible overtime and weekly rest pay.

3 Bio industry

Paid midweek holidays include Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, provided that the employee would have otherwise worked on that day. Midweek holiday pay for these days is equal to eight hours’ average hourly earnings for employees whose employment relationship has lasted for at least one month before the midweek holiday.

In uninterrupted shift work at processing plants, midweek holiday pay is paid also to employees for whom the midweek holiday in question has been assigned as a day off in the working hour system.

The condition for midweek holiday pay is that the employee has been, according to the working hour system, at work or on annual holiday, paid sick leave or maternity leave, working time reduction leave or other paid leave on the work day immediately preceding and following the midweek holiday.

If the employee has been at work only on either the immediately preceding or following work day, midweek holiday pay is paid only when the absence was granted by the employer or was due to the employee’s annual holiday, maternity leave, illness, military refresher training, paid leave or other comparable reason.

Midweek holiday pay is not paid to monthly salaried employees or to employees who receive a compensation from the employer for the midweek holiday on some other grounds.

Employees working on a midweek holiday are paid wages with a 200% increase.

Employees working on Independence Day are paid wages with a 200% increase instead of the statutory Independence Day pay.
